Kylian Mbappe could have replaced Neymar at Barcelona according to Javier Bordas – a former director at the Nou Camp.
Neymar made the switch to French giants Paris Saint-Germain for a world-record fee of £198million in the summer of 2017.
Bordas explained Barca explored the possibility of signing Mbappe but instead opted to buy Ousmane Dembele, due to technical secretary Robert Fernandez wanting to sign a player that would add more width to the team.

‘When we were to sign Dembele, agent Josep Maria Minguella called me to tell us Mbappe was within reach,’ Bordas told Mundo Deportivo.
‘I spoke with Josep Maria Bartomeu and he told me to look at him.
‘I called Mbappe’s father and he told me that we was not going to go to Real Madrid because Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale were there and that instead he could go to Barca because Neymar had left.
‘The president of Monaco preferred that he signed for Barcelona so as not to reinforce PSG, a direct rival. And it could have been done for £90m.

DEMBELE’S STATS SINCE 2017-18 SEASON
‘Robert preferred Dembele and Pep Segura supported him. The explanation was that Mbappe plays for himself and Dembele plays for the team, and since a winger like Ney had left, Robert preferred a winger more than a finisher.’
Whilst Dembele has shown glimpses of the brilliance that he displayed at previous clubs Rennes and Borussia Dortmund, the 23-year-old has spent much of his time at the Nou Camp injured or on the bench.
The Frenchman has featured in 82 matches in three years with a return of 22 goals and 17 assists.
Mbappe’s stock however has only risen since he joined PSG from Monaco in 2017, and he has been the focal point of their domestic success and scored in the 2018 World Cup final as France beat Croatia.
However, the 21 year-old’s contract with the French champions expires in 2022 and he has yet to agree a new deal sparking rumours that he could be set for a big move with Real Madrid and Liverpool just a few names monitoring his situation.
